Large Double-Headed Drum
Large Double-Headed Drum
Region: Southwest – Arizona/New Mexico
Circa: 19th century
Materials: Naturally hollowed tree trunk, thick rawhide drum heads (front and back), rawhide lacing, mineral (hematite?) pigments
Dimension: L. 27” x W. 14 ½” x H. 21”
Collection History: Acquired at auction in New Mexico in the early 1990’s.
Condition: Overall good: some loss and abrasions to wood, warping to hide, some lashing separation, period repairs. There is a worn repair at the base of the figure’s right arm. The hide patch is affixed with tree resin. There is no contemporary restoration.
Comments: Imagery suggests a hunter-shaman on one side and a deer (the presumed quest) on the other. The stylized feather headdress of the hunter bears resemblance to traditional Apache head gear. The lobe shaped ear treatment is reminiscent of rock paintings throughout the Southwest.
